WINTER, Richard (P52/56) died August 2024. After King’s, Richard joined an Underwriting firm in the City and was then called up for National Service. He served as an Able Seaman in the Navy, refusing Officer status because he wanted to be ‘part of the crew’ and see the world. He did travel the world with the Navy; across the seas and oceans and witnessed the explosion of the Hydrogen bomb on Christmas Island.
He was a very keen yachtsman and from having a ‘Cadet’ dinghy as a teenager he graduated to Merlin Rockets. He also owned a Thames ‘A’ Class Rater (in which he won every cup available!). His last boat was a Drascombe Coaster, on which he spent many happy times. He was an RYA Measurer and received an award from the IYRU General Assembly in 1994. In 1995 he received the RYA Yachtsman’s Award, which was presented by the President, HRH The Princess Anne. This news was reported by his wife, Gay.
